Ice cream makers have been with us for more than 2000 years whether you believe it or not. In fact, until the invention of the refrigerator, in the 1920s almost all ice cream makers followed the same principle, one that was developed by the ancient Persians nearly two millenia ago.
It is is formed when you agitate dairy products slowly while keeping it cool at the same time. Doing it quickly and in a warm environment gave you yoghurt. Obviously it had to be sweet, but when ice cream was first eaten it was done so with fruits and their concentrates, not sugar.
Counter Stools Metal
The machine that was used to make ice cream was patented in the early 1800s and consisted of a metal container that was placed inside a wooden bucket into which you put in ice and salt. The metal container had all the ingredients and the ice and salt mixture that surrounded it kept it at the right temperature. The salt was mixed in the ice because it lowered the freezing point of water to below 0 °C.
The whole contraption was covered with a lid, and the metal canister in the middle had paddles that had a crank on the outside. This crank was rotated by hand for between 20 min to half an hour. Nowadays you do get motorised cranks that run on electricity.
In this day and age when everything is the latest in technology, it will surprise you to know that people prefer this old fashioned ice cream maker because many people find that this machine makes the best ice cream. Not only that you get up to a 6 quart container which means more for everyone, as apposed to the one or two quarts that the counter top ones give.
Of course the wooden bucket is not very durable and starts to spring leaks after some time, but then you can always keep it outside in your verandah and problem solved. It is however good to do a little background research on which company makes good ones, because many of them use substandard materials and you end up getting something that does not last you even a couple of years.
